HUNTING AREAS:
The Selous Game Reserve is the largest, uninhabited area in the world
exclusively set aside for wildlife. It is roughly 20,000 square miles in
size or about the size of Belgium. Founded in 1922, the Selous was named
after the great explorer and sportsman Frederick Courtney Selous, who
was killed there in 1917 during World War 1 by a German sniper.
Dominated by the Rufigi River ecosystem, the Selous is a wonderful
mixture of miombo woodland, with large open plains sprinkled with
Terminalia trees, and short grass Savannah that supports large numbers
of wildlife such as buffalo, zebra, eland, waterbuck, reedbuck,
bushbuck, Nyasa wildebeest, impala, giraffe, warthog, bushpig, Sharp's
grysbok and other species. The margins of these Savannah's are inhabited
by large numbers of elephant. Also present are East African greater
kudu, Roosevelt's sable, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, duiker (red, blue
and common) and a large number of lion and leopard. The various rivers
support large numbers of hippopotamus and crocodile. The fishing can be
excellent for the famous tiger fish.
The company also has access to a superb area in the Masai region, the
area first made famous by the likes of Hemingway and Ruark who both
hunted there. The Masai area is composed of dry thorn bush country, with
some mountain areas, plains and dry riverbeds known as Mbugas. The
species here include the classic "Masai" species of lesser kudu,
gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, Grant and Thompson gazelles as well as
excellent buffalo, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, eland, Coke's hartebeest,
reedbuck, bushbuck, impala, warthog, bushpig, East African bush duiker,
klipspringer, steinbuck and dik-dik. Bird shooting for species such as
frankolin, guineafowl, spurfowl, ducks, geese and doves is excellent.
Safaris are currently conducted in the Selous, and in Masailand from
July through December. Here truly is a great opportunity for the Hunter
seeking a traditional African safari accompanied by classically trained
professional hunters in the tradition of Ruark and Roosevelt.
