HUNT TANZANIA

HUNTING AREAS:

The Selous Game Reserve is the largest, uninhabited area in the world exclusively set aside for wildlife. It is roughly 20,000 square miles in size or about the size of Belgium. Founded in 1922, the Selous was named after the great explorer and sportsman Frederick Courtney Selous, who was killed there in 1917 during World War 1 by a German sniper.

Dominated by the Rufigi River ecosystem, the Selous is a wonderful mixture of miombo woodland, with large open plains sprinkled with Terminalia trees, and short grass Savannah that supports large numbers of wildlife such as buffalo, zebra, eland, waterbuck, reedbuck, bushbuck, Nyasa wildebeest, impala, giraffe, warthog, bushpig, Sharp's grysbok and other species. The margins of these Savannah's are inhabited by large numbers of elephant. Also present are East African greater kudu, Roosevelt's sable, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, duiker (red, blue and common) and a large number of lion and leopard. The various rivers support large numbers of hippopotamus and crocodile. The fishing can be excellent for the famous tiger fish.

The company also has access to a superb area in the Masai region, the area first made famous by the likes of Hemingway and Ruark who both hunted there. The Masai area is composed of dry thorn bush country, with some mountain areas, plains and dry riverbeds known as Mbugas. The species here include the classic "Masai" species of lesser kudu, gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, Grant and Thompson gazelles as well as excellent buffalo, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, eland, Coke's hartebeest, reedbuck, bushbuck, impala, warthog, bushpig, East African bush duiker, klipspringer, steinbuck and dik-dik. Bird shooting for species such as frankolin, guineafowl, spurfowl, ducks, geese and doves is excellent.

Safaris are currently conducted in the Selous, and in Masailand from July through December. Here truly is a great opportunity for the Hunter seeking a traditional African safari accompanied by classically trained professional hunters in the tradition of Ruark and Roosevelt.

SAFARI CAMPS & GENERAL INFORMATION:

Hunting clients and their guests are accommodated in classic safari camps. The spacious tents are insect proof and are equipped with en-suite flush toilets and hot showers. Fridges and deep freezers, two way radios, medical and snake bite kits are in all camps. The location of our camps is of the utmost importance, in the Selous they are located on the shores of the rivers allowing clients to also indulge in the exciting sport of Tiger Fishing. Gourmet meals are served with the finest available vegetables and condiments. Bottled water and a selection of beers, wines and spirits are provided. Accommodations also include daily laundry service and a staff to meet your every need. We make every effort to cater for everyone's individual needs to ensure the success and enjoyment of your safari.

The Country:

Situated in East Africa on the Indian Ocean just south of Kenya with an area of 353,000 square miles, Tanzania is over twice the size of the state of California. The country is comprised of a central plateau, coastal plains and the northern highlands, dominated by Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Tanzania is the finest game country in Africa, famous for it's abundant wildlife, National Parks and Game Reserves such as Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and the Selous to mention but a few.

The Climate and Language:

The climate is tropical on the coast and varies to temperate in the northern highlands. The population is relatively small. The official language is Swahili but English is widely spoken both by Government officials and by the local population. We also conduct exclusive photographic, Tiger Fishing and bird shooting safaris. These are individually tailored to suit each client's individual requirements.

Hunting Season:

The current official hunting season begins 1st July and runs through 31st December of the year. All safaris are conducted according to the Laws of Tanzania and strictly fair chase.
